How to clean your Down Comforter:

To keep your comforter clean we recommend putting it inside a duvet cover and washing the cover as needed. If you absolutely must clean your down comforter we do not recommend cleaning it more than once every few years. Most of our comforters are made with a cotton cover and filled with goose down in these instances you can safely clean your comforter by following these very important steps:

Step One:

  1. Always check the care label first for cleaning guidelines; they vary from product to product.
  2. If you prefer to wash the product yourself we recommend going to a Laundromat, as you will need an extra-large capacity front-loading commercial washing machine to handle the bulk of the comforter. Before putting your comforter into the machine make sure to check for any rips or open seams and repair if needed before washing. Your next steps are listed below.

Step Two:

  1. Spot treat all stains.
  2. Set the washing machine on a delicate, warm water setting.
  3. Use a special detergent formulated for down or a mild baby detergent; use sparingly, too much soap can strip the down.
  4. Place the comforter loosely into the machine.
  5. Set the washer to rinse twice to ensure that all the soap has been rinsed out.

NOTE: Wet down has an odor; don’t be alarmed the odor will disappear as the comforter dries.

Step Three:

NOTE: You must completely dry your comforter. Be prepared as this could take several hours. It is very important that the comforter get completely dry to prevent mold growth. Use an extra-large capacity dryer to give the comforter maximum space.

  1. Choose an air-dry (no heat) setting or the dryer's lowest possible setting.
  2. We recommend adding tennis balls in a clean white sock or two dryer balls in the dryer with your comforter. This prevents the down from clumping together and helps separate and fluff the down as it dries.
  3. Remove the comforter from the dryer periodically and check to make sure the down is separating and not clumping together. Hold the comforter up to the light work out any lumps you see or feel. Then put the comforter back in the machine and resume drying.
  4. Finally, hang the comforter in the sun for a few hours, this will allow natural air to circulate and the comforter to “breath.”

NOTE: To prevent mildew, do not store the comforter for one month after washing, it is important to make sure it is completely dry before storing.

Spring Cleaning for your Comforter

As an alternative to washing your comforter in the machine, spot treat instead and When the weather allows your comforter will benefit from some fresh air. When Spring arrives take advantage of the fresh air, shake out your comforter and hang your comforter out in the sunlight. This provides you with a natural, fresh and environmentally friendly way of cleaning your product.

How to clean a Down Alternative Comforter:

Synthetic filled comforters are able to be laundered; as long as the fabric ticking is washable and the product is not too large for the washing machines. Synthetic items should be washed in cold to medium temperatures, using a mild detergent. Drying times are less for synthetic products; however they should be dried at lower temperatures not exceeding 140-160 degrees. Also recommended is “fluffing” of the products on a regular basis.

How to clean your Down Pillow:

Pillows are the easiest product to wash at home in your washing machine. Unless of course the fabric is not down proof or is a type of fabric not conducive to machine wash. Always look at the care label for specific care instructions. Otherwise you can wash it in your machine by itself with a very mild detergent (do not use any fabric softeners). The washing is the easy part the drying takes some patience. As a pillow may take hours to dry. However it can and should be thoroughly dried in the machine on tumble dry low. Once dried we would recommend letting it air out, outside in the sunshine.

How to clean your Down blanket:

If the fabric type is not conducive to washing, frequently shake out to refresh the filling, Air outside when possible and spot clean small stains with a mild detergent. Take care to dry completely with a hand held dryer. If the fabric type is OK to wash then as with your comforter or pillow, put it in a front load washing machine with a mild detergent, then when drying set the dryer on tumble dry low and dry for as long as it takes for it to dry completely, this is usually a few hours.

How to clean your Bed Topper:

In the case of Feather Beds and Fiber Beds these are generally too large to be cleaned at home. Spot clean as often as necessary.  If the stain is large take to a professional who can help determine the best method of cleaning.

Regarding a mattress pad, Avoid cleaning often and spot clean when necessary. If it needs to be washed, it should be done in a larger commercial washer (such as those in a Laundromat) with a mild detergent. Tumble dry low heat and make sure to get the product completely dry.
